Ken Rudge (England)Great biographies are hard to come by. This one comes at the top of my list. Taking notes from his diary Elizabeth Elliott has provided us with a vivid picture of her martyred husband’s early years and calling to serve God. His devotion steams off the page. Don’t touch it if you don’t want to live for God!

Jack Hay (Scotland)For my generation, Shadow of the Almighty, was compulsory reading. We lived through the days when Jim Elliot and his colleagues were martyred in Ecuador, and his widow Elisabeth tells his life story in a way which made some of us think that we were playing at being Christians. This book contributed to the conviction that we should live for God, rather than being content with spiritual mediocrity.

Jim McKendrick (USA)Maybe the most important event in the spread of the gospel that occurred in the 20th century was the martyrdom of 5 men in the jungles of Ecuador in January of 1956. This is the account of the life of Jim Elliot, one of the five, by his wife. Jim’s life of devotion to God and his passion for the gospel is one of the great missionary stories of our time. The famous quote from Jim Elliot’s life is “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
